Helpful information and links on specific resources

NOTICE

15th April 2024

We have just renewed our subscription to the Australian Standards.

If you see an “Invalid parameters. Please re-download this document” error when you try to open an Australian Standard PDF from your device, you will need to go to the database to re-download the Australian Standard.

Apologies for the inconvenience which is imposed on us by Standards Australia.

Access Standards

Search for Australian and New Zealand Standards in the Standards Australia Database

Use Chrome for best results

Please note that we no longer subscribe to every standard.  Contact your lecturer if you have been referred to a standard not in the database.  If you are a lecturer, please complete this form to request an addition to the collection. The Standard must be essential for teaching, not optional.

Standards Australia Digital Rights Management

Main changes affecting your use of the Standards

Standards Australia has introduced Digital Rights Management on all its Standards.  This will affect how you access and use the Standards accessible to you through South Metropolitan TAFE.

1. Instructions for bulk printing via JOTA are on the Library intranet page.

2. You will need to make changes to the set-up on your computer or device to read the Standards. Our help sheets will guide you through the process.

3. Downloaded copies are locked to the device they were downloaded on and cannot be shared. For the same reason, only the first copy downloaded will open.  The filename will have the suffix 'primary' with no number.

See our handy Trouble-shooting guide and helpsheets on this page for more information and assistance with these changes.

If you are trying to access offsite or on a mobile device, then check if your set-up is correct, that you have installed the FileOpen Plug in from the Standards Australia database,  and that you have Acrobat Reader installed.  Use these helpsheets to guide you through the process

Help Opening PDFs in Acrobat Reader

When reading a Standard you may need to set your browser to open in Acrobat Reader. (Note for staff - you may need to change the setting back to the default to view payslips or other online documents)

If the Standard opens but you see scrambled text, then you need to open the file without a number is brackets on the end of the file name.

If you cannot see that file, then were you sent an attachment, or are you accessing on a shared drive?  These will not display correctly because of the digital rights management (DRM).  Please access the database directly and download again.
