ABCDE Assessment – OSCE Guide (2023)
The ABCDE approach is used to systematically assess an acutely unwell patient. It involves working through the following steps:
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Disability
Exposure
Each stage of the ABCDE approach involves clinical assessment, investigations and interventions. Problems are addressed as they are identified, and the patient is re-assessed regularly to monitor their response to treatment.
ABCDE cognitive aid tool in patient assessment – development and validation in a multicenter pilot simulation study (2020)
The so called ABCDE approach (Airway-Breathing-Circulation-Disability-Exposure) is a golden standard of patient assessment. The efficacy of using cognitive aids (CA) in resuscitation and peri-arrest situations remains an important knowledge gap.
ABCDE Medical Assessment (2018) - Online Video
Physical assessment of the unwell or deteriorating patient should be carried out according to a systematic ABCDE approach, where ABCDE stands for:
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Disability, covering level of consciousness, and
Exposure.
ACLS Primary Survey (ABCDE) ProMed
The Primary Assessment is utilized either on an unconscious patient after a BLS assessment or on a conscious patient where the BLS assessment is not typically required (in the case of cardiac or respiratory arrest). The primary ACLS survey is included in every ACLS algorithm.
AUSMED - How to assess a deteriorating / critically ill patient (ABCDE Assessment)
Patients admitted to hospital expect to feel confident that should their health deteriorate, they are in the best, safest place for prompt and efficient treatment.
This article will discuss how to assess a deteriorating/critically ill patient using the ABCDE (airway, breathing, circulation, disability and exposure) systematic approach.
Changes in performance during repeated in-situ simulations with different cases (2021)
The aim was to describe changes in the performance of clinical actions, during repeated in-situ simulations with different cases, by teams of healthcare professionals with different experiences of the systematic clinical observation of deteriorating patients, after an introduction to the Airways, Breathing, Circulation, Disability,Environment/Exposure (ABCDE) approach.
Serious illness - Perth Children's Hospital (2023)
Recognition of the deteriorating child
Children may deteriorate whilst in the Emergency Department.2 Repeated assessment of patients will allow changes to be detected and may be requested by family members or staff caring for the child.
The structured approach should identify a deteriorating child and any impending respiratory, cardiovascular, or central neurological failure.
Using the ABCDE approach to assess the deteriorating patient (2017)
The aim of this article is to outline each component of the ABCDE (airway, breathing, circulation, disability, exposure) approach to patient assessment, providing explanations for findings and proposed interventions. It also explores the use of a structured communication tool that can be used in the context of a deteriorating patient.
Why you should use an ABCDE approach to patient assessment (2021)
The ABCDE approach is the most recognised tool for rapid patient assessment, it allows us to recognise life-threatening conditions early and provides a systematic method that focuses on fixing problems before moving on, meaning we implement critical interventions in a timely manner.

Older people and falls - Health Direct
Nearly 1 in 3 older Australians have experienced a fall in the past 12 months.
Falls usually happen because gradual changes to our bodies make walking difficult, or they can be caused by hazards in and around the home.
Falls can cause hip fractures and other injuries that require lengthy hospital care and long-term effects.
See your doctor for a check-up if you have ever fallen before, even if you weren’t injured as a result.
