To cite traditional knowledge, include as much information in the in-text reference as you can. Important elements to include if possible are author, appropriate community, language, and date of correspondence.

For oral histories do not provide an end of text reference.

Use this citation only when a recoverable source is not available, for example:

  • Cultural expressions: Language, stories, song lines, music performance, visual arts, craft, architecture, designs, and symbols.
  • Knowledge: Know how practices, skills, and innovation (agricultural, scientific, technical, ecological, medicinal, and biodiversity).

Due to the cultural diversities in Aboriginal societies, oral histories will vary depending where on country they originate from. For example traditional stories from the Kimberly will differ from traditional stories from South West of WA.*
