APA Referencing: Images & Artworks

This Guide will help you to correctly reference your assignments using the APA style.

Images etc

If you are copying an image to include in an assignment, there are additional referencing requirements.

A caption and copyright attribution is required and placed as close to the image as possible. See format below. A full reference is still required in the reference list.

In-Text - Not Copying an Image

If you are only referring to an artwork in-text, then the standard referencing rules apply as shown below.

Note:

  • Include a description of the medium/format in square brackets after the title. i.e. [Lithograph], [Oil painting], [Acrylic on Canvas]
  • For untitled artwork, include a description in square brackets in place of a title.
  • If available, the URL should include the link to the actual artwork on the website.

Images - Copy of Clip Art - Microsoft 365

Clip art sourced from Microsoft Office products do not require citation, permission, or copyright attribution. However, it is best practice to attribute the source to clarify to your lecturers that the clip art is not your own work. However, check with your lecturer if they require you to attribute clip art used in your assignments.

The attribution should be placed as close as possible to the clip art you have used. You do not need to include in your reference list.

Images - Open Source Clip Art

It is best practice to attribute the source to clarify to your lecturers that the clip art is not your own work. 

A caption and copyright attribution is required and placed as close to the image as possible.

You should always check the terms of use/licence before using any clip art from an open source website. Some may not allow direct linking to the image. When the this occurs, use the URL of the website home page.

Anatomy TV is a licenced product subscribed to by the Library.

If you are including an actual image in an assignment, the referencing requirements differ.

A caption and copyright attribution is required and is placed as close to the image as possible. See example below. A full reference is still required in the reference list.

If you are only referring to an image from Anatomy TV in-text, then the standard in-text and reference list rules apply.

Some Creative Commons licences state that no attribution is required, however it is good practice to provide the licence attribution and reference to clarify to your lecturers that the image is not your own work.

A caption and copyright attribution is placed as close to the image as possible and include the Creative Commons licence. Check out Creative Commons for more information.

  • If the image is untitled, include a description in square brackets in place of a title.
  • When a work has no identified author, the title may be used in the author position.
  • Use a retrieval date as images can change or disappear from websites other than gallery/museum websites.
