  • Do not include the database name or URL unless the journal is only available through that database, such as the JBI or UpToDate databases. For more information on these specialist health databases refer to the tab above.
  • If the journal does not use volume, issue, and/or article or page numbers, omit the missing element(s).

What is a DOI?

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumerical string assigned to a work for use on digital networks. The DOI provides current information on where the digital object can be found on the Internet.

  • Where a DOI exists, you must always include the DOI in your reference.
  • If a resource has both a DOI and a URL, you must use the DOI.
  • DOI’s must be presented as hyperlinks. Be consistent in how you format your hyperlinks.
  • Where possible use the DOI format i.e. https://doi.org/xxxxxxxxxx
  • Retrieval date is not required.

Magazines are usually for public consumption unlike journals that have a specific audience. They are often published weekly, monthly and bi-monthly.
