APA Referencing: Social Media

This Guide will help you to correctly reference your assignments using the APA style.

Social Media

Only reference original content from social media sites. If you find third party content on social media and want to use it, reference it directly. You do not need to indicate that you found it through a link on social media.

Follow the same format as for journal articles.

 

Reference List

Author Surname, Initial/s. (Publication Year, Month Day). Blog post title. Blog name. URL.

Note:

  • Blog posts follow the same format as journal articles.
  • Blog name is in italics, the same as you would for a journal title.
  • Screen names can be used if the author’s name is not available.

The following information applies to public facing pages. Private pages, temporary posts are treated as personal communication.

Note:

  • Retain any non-standard spelling, capitalisation, hashtags, emojis etc.
  • The real name of the author or group is provided first, followed by the screen name in square brackets. If only the screen name is known, provide it without brackets.
  • Use the title of the page in italics. e.g. Home, About etc.
  • Include the description [Facebook page] after the title in square brackets.
  • Include retrieval date as content does change and is not archived.

  • Describe the type of post (e.g., “[Photo],” “[Video]”) in square brackets after the title.
  • When referencing an Instagram highlight, include a retrieval statement because highlights can change at any time.
