This Guide will help you to correctly reference your assignments using the APA style.

Check with your lecturer to see if they require Blackboard resources to be included in your Reference List. If not required, treat the resources as a Personal Communication. See Other Sources tab above for further information..

Note:

  • If the slides contain references to information published elsewhere, and you want to reference that information as well, it is best practice to read, and reference the original source if possible.
  • Include the unit code in title.
  • Provide the material format in square brackets after the title.
  • If you are writing for an audience with access to the same resource, provide the name of the site and its login page URL.

Note:

  • Full date of publication is required for the reference list.
  • Include a description in square brackets after the title, i.e. [Media release].
  • Omit the publisher details if the same as the corporate author.

Create a reference only when the materials can be downloaded directly from the Open Education Resource (OER) repository. Use this format for any materials in any OER repository.

If you are directed to another website page, reference that specific webpage where the materials are retrieved from.

Note:

  • Use as specific a date as is available on the webpage. i.e. year only; a year and month; or a year, month, and day.
  • Italicize the title of resource.
  • Include a retrieval statement and date if the contents are designed to change over time and versions are not archived.

WHOLE WEBSITE

  • Do not create references or in-text citations for whole websites.
  • To mention a website in general, and not any particular information on that site, provide the name of the website within your text and include the URL in brackets.
  • To cite information/resources/documents on a website, determine the type of reference required and then follow the style for that format.

Note:

  • Where the corporate author and website name are the same, there is no need to repeat the website name.
  • When individual author(s) are credited on the webpage, list them.
  • Use a specific date, if possible, especially if an update date is provided.
  • Do not use the copyright date from a webpage footer or the date of last review. If the date is unknown or cannot be determined, write “n.d.” as the date.
  • Italicize the title of the webpage.
  • For individual authors, provide the website name after the title.
  • Include the retrieval date only if the content cited is of a temporary nature and the page is not archived.
